We adamantly declare Black Lives Matter at School.
Students need Black teachers, support from school counselors not cops, Black History and Ethnic Studies, and an end to zero tolerance policies. We must attend to systems and networks of care to achieve safe equitable school communities where students feel they belong.
Anti-Blackness is built into school policies and procedures. Students are forced to adhere to dress code policies that prevent them from wearing their natural hair. Students continue to go to schools that have cops, but no mental health care or even health care staff. When students learn truthful history that includes anti-racist lessons, students develop empathy and cultural pride. Students deserve grace, love, and guidance. Tolerance is the floor; we want relationships restored and communities transformed.
We are dedicated to ensuring Black Lives Matter in schools and are asking you to join us. We invite you to lead with the heart and courageously work to address racial injustice in education, embody and celebrate Black joy, confront anti-Blackness, and build authentic partnerships with all who support creating equitable school communities. By advocating for our four demands, we set the foundation toward racial justice in schools. Our work creates support and belonging for future graduates. Let it be known that you are a part of a national movement to ensure that Black Lives Matter at School.
