The annual Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action is upon us! Our theme this year, Collective Value, is so timely and powerful. We need acts of participation on all levels from all who envision collective liberation.
At our final group planning check in, we will hear from supporters in our network and learn about their planned actions during the week. We will discover activities we can plan with enough time leading up to the first day of the week - “last-minute” ideas. And we will journal about what collective liberation can mean or look like. Expect music! Expect crowd participation! (like doing the wave in the chat) We realize ideas may be at various stages of the planning process. There are many ways to participate in the Week of Action. You can use the student creative challenge as a lesson, show a film, or host a sip n' paint. You can organize a postcard campaign, book drive, or double dutch party. Here is our updated starter kit, now guide, What We Do & How We Done It: A Guide for BLM at School. It has ideas and resources to support you in your planning process. (bit.ly/wwdhwdi) This is an invitation to all who have pledged their participation in Black Lives Matter at School and the Week of Action and Year of Purpose. We want to hear from schools, teachers, students, parents, unions, and community supporters and organizations. Please register to attend or send us material related to your plans (ex: short video sharing about your plans, a flyer or graphic, document or link). You can add them to the sign-up form for individuals or organizations at blacklivesmatteratschool.com/woa

What We Do & How We Done It: A Guide for BLM at School We’re excited to share an updated version of our previous starter kit, What We Do and How We Done It: A Guide for Black Lives Matter at School 2024. Inside you will find the story of how BLM at School started and grew, teaching and planning resources, Week of action ideas for in and out of the classroom, frequently asked questions, photos, and more! Read and share the guide as we prepare for the week.
The Week of Action centers 13 guiding principles and 4 demands of Black Lives Matter at School. From double dutch parties to rallies in front of the department of education, students, educators, families, unions, and community organizations participate both in and outside of the classroom.
This year’s theme is Collective Value. The Black Lives Matter at School guiding principle of Collective Values states, “We are guided by the fact that all Black lives, regardless of sex assigned at birth, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, economic status, ability, disability, education, location, age, immigration status, religious beliefs or disbeliefs, matter. None of us are free until we are all free.” |
